The future of old computers…

2010 . Dec . 19

(in the spirit of the ‘half-written’ letters bit… here’s a post that’s been half written for more than a year. I had to update the file links because of the server transition… but that’s about all I changed.) Today’s computers are pretty sweet… but they’ll be old soon enough. And so will you. If you’ve been [...]

Much ado about Wikileaks, Amazon and corporate influence

2010 . Dec . 15

It’s a frustrating position to be in. I don’t care very much for the way that I see things occurring in the real world. Yet, there’s really nothing I can do about it. So, it occurred to me when I saw that Amazon had blacklisted wikileaks from it’s cloud-services, that I could boycott them. Oh [...]

Flying with birds

2010 . Dec . 14

You wouldn’t be able to tell from comments posted directly on the site (because evidently my ‘readers’ don’t post comments), but I’ve actually gotten a lot of questions IRL about how I think people will be able to plug into machines. Specifically, you might remember an earlier post about how much I’d like to control [...]

How do I get a CR-48 from Google?

2010 . Dec . 7

Today I watched the ChromeOS event and I’m sold. I can’t wait to get a CR48 with Chrome OS on it from Google.  But HOW DO I GET ONE OF THESE DEVICES?!?!?! (I won’t be able to type like that when I finally do get one, because there’s no caps-lock key) I signed up for [...]

What do nano-photonics have to do with virtual pets and zombies?

2010 . Dec . 1

So, this morning at work I read an interesting bit about silicon nano-photonic CMOS chips from IBM. And, while this crap-hole of a blog is probably the last place you’d look to find information about such developments, it’s still a good outlet for some sci-fi sort of thinking about the future. What follows started out [...]

Free Speech and Freedom From Gate Rape

2010 . Nov . 22

So, if it ever comes up in conversation… here’s a good reason to have free-speech (net-neutral bit transmission). This guy is operating a private blog, and has a very important story to tell. Imagine if somebody (a cable-modem operator) in a position of authority decided that you weren’t supposed to be reading this. Then you’d [...]

Not-so-intelligent-design… the laryngeal nerve of the giraffe.

2010 . Nov . 1

As a legacy-design this was a control wire for the gills of ancient fish.  In mammalian species, this nerve has stretched to strange proportions. (p.s. there’s a lot of guts in this video, as it’s a dissection of a giraffe)

Some birds are fast… so fast.

2010 . Sep . 19

Any of my friends will tell you, I’m a dork for birds.  In particular, it’s the working model of air-viscosity that birds seem to have which intrigues me.  Is it instinctual, coming form their genetics? Or is it a function of living their lives in the air, that each bird learns about wind and motion independently [...]

Dave McClure, I thoroughly disagree with you.

2010 . May . 22

tl;dr – Some guy said some things I disagree with, then commented on an article about his statement. I saw that he responded, and thought it might be a prime opportunity to spout off. My reply: it’s not a zero sum game, don’t pretend like you’re something bigger than you are… you’re status and position [...]

Is this the Future of Google Wave Servers? I think so…

2010 . Apr . 23

I’m a big fan of Google Wave, but I think it’s really hard to imagine using in conjunction with e-mail.  And it seems to me that the chatty, e-maily features that you see in your browser might not be the really important future of Wave.  The UI is cool, don’t get me wrong, and it [...]
